The Starting Bank

Topic Progress:

The starting bank, or bank, is the beginning cash balance for a particular register.  It should contain a sufficient amount of money to complete business for a shift.  The starting bank should be comprised of lower denomination bills and coins.  At the beginning of a shift, the starting bank will be inventoried out to the employee with two employees verifying the contents of the bank.  At the end of the shift, the bank will be inventoried back in to the safe and verified by two employees.  All banks will be placed back into the safe each night.

Checking Out A Starting Bank

Before starting a shift requiring a cash bank, the employee will check out a starting bank.  The bank will be pulled from the safe by a manager, assistant manager or qualified supervisor.  The manager, assistant manager or qualified supervisor will count the bank and verify the contents is correct by filling out the inventory log with the amount of the bank and signing off that it is correct.  The employee checking out the starting bank will then count the bank and verify the contents by signing the inventory log.

Checking In A Starting Bank

At the end of the shift, the employee will check the starting bank back into the safe.  The employee will count the bank and verify the contents is correct by filling out the inventory log with the amount of the bank and signing off that it is correct.  The manager, assistant manager or qualified supervisor will then count the bank and verify the contents by signing the inventory log.

Contents Of The Bank

Employees should try and leave the lowest denomination bills for the starting bank.  This will help ensure that the next employee has change for the next shift using that starting bank.  If it is not possible to leave small bills, change should be acquired before checking the bank back in to the safe.

Bank Is Incorrect

The bank should never be over or short the original starting amount.  If the bank is checked out or checked back in at the wrong amount, please notify a manger as soon as possible so that it can be corrected.
